"Wilma", the story so far...

Postby StuartH on August 1st, 2008, 7:53 pm

Most of you know the story of my car... but here it is again

I bought the car in 2006 (I was a member on here before, with a '97 LX), totally standard but very nice for it - I was looking for a Panther black or Silver one, but when I saw the car in it's unusual Amparo blue... I had to have her.

For the first few months I made a nuisance of myself with teething problems... things like aircon condensor shot, usual Mondeo things and as I planned to keep her standard I spent my time getting her "A1".
Then, I saw a car at a show that was different to the normal ST Kitted Mondeo's... and knew I wanted mine to look similar... but different, the important thing was that it had to look like it could be factory standard it was so subtle. So I started work.
First round of mods were....
Lowered on Eibachs and ST struts.
Blue side repeaters.
Bomz Kit.
Debadge.
Foglights.
Maplights.
Footwell Lights.
Front grill to handmade Chrome 'n Mesh.
Rear trim to Chrome.
Number plates and chrome surrounds.
(June 2007 - sorry, some of the pics don't include the new plates)

Next to come was a little bling under the bonnet, 2ltr cams and throttle body along with a remap - power was up to just under 130bhp. Also added Ghia/ST24 wheels at this point.

Then I set about the body - Colour coded handles were a must, so were bought off eBay - wrong colour but would be sprayed anyway. Mirrors as well, again - were the wrong colour but they went in my stash of parts along with the switch and wiring to make them electric instead of manual. Then I got lucky and found a genuine zetec-s rear bumper on eBay for the princely sum of £30! Mint condition, but the wrong colour... again it went onto the pile of bits. I bought new genuine ST sideskirts for £120 and added it to the growing pile in the corner of the bedroom (Thanks for putting up with this sweetheart :D ). A chrome tailpipe trim finished the half a car at the end of the bed
That left the question of the splitter... I didn't want an ST bumper, and I don't think any front bumper except standard or ST looks good on a mk2... so what to do? I set about making a splitter, but lack of talent soon made it obvious that it was a non starter... so I nearly settled for an ST bumper, so glad I didn't because at the height of my frustration I came across a shop on ebay Germany who had a lovely splitter that was made for a Mk2. I snapped it up for £100 and awaited delivery, expecting to have to do a lot of work to a poor quality fibreglass product. When it came, I was overjoyed as the moulding was fabulous and on first hold up to the car it fitted perfectly! Result. Off to paint the bits went, and a few blemishes on the car were resprayed as well (a dent on the drivers rear door meant a whole side had to be painted to get the colour match). I got the car back on a Saturday, with the bits in the boot and by 11pm she looked like this... and the Mrs was happy to have the bedroom back!!!!

Since then, not much really - the car has been mapped again, and the bomz kit replaced for standard induction.. now putting out 143bhp on super unleaded. The black door trims came off and the yellow indicator bulbs replaced with chrome ones.

Next on the list is the interior, but with funds tight that may have to wait a while.

Honest opinions welcome, please don't tell me you like it if you don't - instead give me the reasons you don't like it :D

That car of yours was tidy in the first place but looking great now with the mods. Nice one. Most people say "Im keeping it standard" but as time goes on you just can't help yourself :D :D :D

Thanks for the comments, everyone.

The induction kit came off for 2 reasons, firstly the plan for the car was for it to be subtle and look as if it "could have come out of the factory like that". The noise and look of an induction kit simply didn't match.
Secondly, with the other mods - the car simply performs better with an enclosed K&N panel filter rather than an induction kit. It gives 4bhp more after the remap without the kit and doesn't suffer from a fueling hole at high revs (something which the tuner tried to iron out with the induction kit many times before we gave up and refitted the standard induction)
I was always happy with the kit when the engine was otherwise standard though.

Thanks, Ryan - it took a lot of hard work to get the engine that clean. It had not been cleaned in 80,000 miles before I bought the car!

It's still not perfect, but bears up to anything except close inspection.

Hopefully before next show season I will get a chance to lift the engine and box out to give it a very thorough clean and to give the block a lick of paint.
